Katharine Fortin

 

Dr. Katharine Fortin is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University where she teaches international humanitarian law (IHL), international human rights law (IHRL) and public international law. She is the author of The Accountability of Armed Groups under Human Rights Law (Oxford University Press, 2017) which won the 2018 Francis Lieber Prize from the American Society of International Law. She has written widely on legal personality, law-making, rebel governance and the relationship between IHL and IHRL.

She is the founder and co-editor of the Armed Groups and International Law blog which is a key resource for scholars and practitioners working on the topic of armed groups and international law. Before entering academia, Katharine worked as a Litigation Associate at Norton Rose Fulbright and an Associate Legal Officer at the ICTY. She holds an LL.M (summa cum laude) (2006) and a PhD (cum laude) from Utrecht University (2015).
