Jonathan Somer

Jonathan has worked for a good part of the last 20 years on international law issues related to non-state armed groups. In 2007, he was awarded the Henry Dunant prize for his scholarship on the legality of armed group courts. Since then, he has engaged with numerous armed groups across the globe towards their compliance with international humanitarian law, and has been involved in the publication of several reports on armed group perspectives on IHL. He has also spearheaded efforts to ensure armed groups are included as stakeholders in processes aimed at developing humanitarian norms.

As Legal Adviser with Geneva Call, he led a consultation process in drafting the Deed of Commitment protecting children in armed conflict, which has now been signed and implemented by over 30 armed groups. He is currently Legal Adviser with the Danish Red Cross.
